Meet a Real Giraffe!

Cool Facts: Giraffes are the tallest land animals in the world, known for their long necks, distinctive spotted coats, and gentle nature. Each giraffe's spots are unique, much like human fingerprints. Their long necks allow them to reach leaves high up in trees, which few other animals can access.

Where They Live: Giraffes live in the savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands of Africa. They are found in countries like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, and Namibia, where there are plenty of acacia trees for them to feed on.

Where They Sleep: Giraffes sleep standing up or lying down, but they do so for only short periods, usually a few minutes at a time. They are always alert to their surroundings to stay safe from potential threats.

Home Life and Social: Giraffes live in loose social groups called towers. These groups can consist of a few individuals to a couple dozen and are usually fluid, with giraffes coming and going. Mothers are very protective of their calves, and young giraffes stay close to their mothers for the first few months of life.

Friendships: Giraffes form social bonds with other members of their tower. They often engage in grooming behaviors, such as licking each other's necks, to strengthen their bonds. Giraffes communicate with each other through various sounds, body language, and even by infrasound, which is below the range of human hearing.

What They Do for Fun: Giraffes enjoy browsing for leaves high up in trees, playing with other giraffes, and exploring their surroundings. Young giraffes, or calves, are especially playful and often seen running and chasing each other.

Size of the Animal: Giraffes can reach heights of 14 to 19 feet, with males generally being taller than females. They can weigh between 1,600 to 3,000 pounds. Their long necks alone can be up to 6 feet long.

Power Level: Despite their gentle appearance, giraffes are powerful animals. They have strong legs and can run up to 35 miles per hour over short distances. Their long necks and powerful legs can also be used for defense.

Lifespan: In the wild, giraffes typically live to be around 20 to 25 years old. In captivity, with proper care, they can live up to 30 years or more.

First Known: Giraffes have been known to humans for thousands of years and are depicted in ancient Egyptian art and other historical records. They have fascinated people for centuries with their unique appearance and gentle demeanor.
